Local schools closed today

All schools in the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District are closed today due to a forecast of snow throughout the day.

A winter storm warning will be in effect until 4 p.m. today for the greater Lake Tahoe area, according to the National Weather Service. In town, snow accumulation is expected to reach 3 to 6 inches today.

Winds will reach 25 mph, with gusts of 50 mph. Over the ridges, gusts are expected to reach greater than 100 mph, decreasing to 75 mph in the afternoon.



Chains or four-wheel drive are required on Interstate 80 from Cisco Grove to 12 miles east of Truckee. On Highway 267 chains or four-wheel drive are required from Truckee to Kings Beach.

On Highway 89 north, chains or snow tires are required four miles north of Truckee to 16 miles north of Truckee, in Sierra County. On Highway 89 south, chains or four-wheel drive are required from Truckee to the Bliss State Park.




There is a chance that off-and-on snow showers will continue for the next few days, according to the National Weather Service.
