50 acres in prescribed burns planned at Tahoe state park
INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — The Nevada Division of Forestry will conduct prescribed burns at Tunnel Creek in the Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park backcountry during March, April and May, weather permitting, officials announced Tuesday.
Tunnel Creek Road, from Highway 28 to Tunnel Creek Station in Incline Village, may be closed in order to conduct the burns. Signs will be posted throughout the area when burns are being conducted, according to a Nevada Division of Forestry news release.
Fifty acres will be burned, part of ongoing fuels treatment and forest restoration efforts conducted by the Nevada Division of Forestry in cooperation with Nevada Division of State Parks, Nevada Division of State Lands and North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District.
“The goal of the project is to create a healthier forest and to make the area more resistant to catastrophic wildfire,” officials said.
Timing of the burns depends on optimum weather conditions, officials said, and steps will be made to minimize impacts to park visitors.
