NORDEN, Calif. — The body of Sugar Bowl ski instructor Carson May was found at about 11 a.m. Monday, according to the resort.

May, 23, had been missing since Jan. 14, prompting a several-day search involving hundreds of local officials and volunteers.

“The discovery was made by Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue and El Dorado County Search and Rescue with the assistance of their rescue dog teams and Sugar Bowl Ski Patrol,” according to a Monday afternoon statement from Sugar Bowl. “The recovery was made roughly a quarter mile out of bounds in an avalanche-prone area near the original search site.”

May, originally of Davis, Calif., worked at Sugar Bowl’s Mountain Sports Learning Center as a ski school instructor and was considered a “highly regarded friend and colleague of many,” according to previous reports.

May reportedly got lost while skiing Jan. 14 amid whiteout conditions at the Donner Summit resort; he was not working at the time of his disappearance.

“This recovery brings closure to his family and Sugar Bowl Resort,” resort officials said. “Carson was an esteemed member of the Sugar Bowl team and a friend to many at the resort. The community’s effort to find Carson has been overwhelming. Our thoughts and prayers are with the May family.”
