Boy, 13, killed by train near Truckee late Sunday afternoon

Staff and wire reports

TRUCKEE, Calif. — A 13-year-old boy was hit and killed by a train Sunday evening while walking along tracks near Truckee.

KXTV in Sacramento reports California and Nevada officials found the boy’s body after responding to reports of a pedestrian incident near Interstate 80.

Anthony William Schafer, 13, of Sun Valley, Nev., was reportedly hit at about 5:15 p.m. on a double-track bridge by a Union Pacific locomotive traveling eastbound near Farad Road, located roughly halfway between Truckee and Reno.

According to a statement Monday morning from the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office, Schafer was looking at the Truckee River from the south side of the railway bridge when he was struck.

The California Highway Patrol says the incident shut down eastbound lanes on I-80 for a few hours.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office dispatch center at 530-265-7880 and ask for Sgt. Mike Sullivan.
