Chief’s Corner: What is the Knox Box system?

NLTFPD Chief Mike Brown

EDITOR’S NOTE: “Chief’s Corner” is a regular feature in the North Lake Tahoe Bonanza from North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District Chief Mike Brown, offering information, tips and education material on fire safety, emergency preparedness and other pertinent topics.

A Knox Box protects your property from forced entry damage during fire and medical emergencies as well as alarm activations. The Knox Box system is UL listed and used by 8,500 fire departments nationwide.

How does it work? The homeowner purchases a secure residential lock box and has it mounted near their front door. A fire department representative comes to your home and locks an access key that you provide into the box. Emergency responders now have access to your home through the use of a Knox Box master key that is only possessed by the fire department.

How does having fire department access into my home benefit me as a homeowner? Fire department access allows rapid entry to render emergency care in the event you are unable to get to the door because of sickness or injury. It also allows fire personnel damage-free entry into your home to investigate fire alarm activation while you are away. Fire department access allows entry to investigate pipe breaks resulting in water damage while you are not home and allows for quicker preparation in an emergency.

How do I purchase a Knox Box for my residence? A Knox Box can be ordered through the North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District by visiting the administration building located at 866 Oriole Way in Incline Village or call 775-831-0351, ext. 0.
