CRYSTAL BAY, Nev. – Renegade Productions will present Delhi 2 Dublin as part of a hip free show Friday night at the Crystal Bay Club, capping the first evening of the 2013 SnowFest! winter carnival across Tahoe’s North Shore.
According to the group’s website, http://www.delhi2dublin.com, Delhi 2 Dublin is non-stop world beat energy. Where else can you see a purple haired fiddle player rocking out with a kilt-wearing Korean flanked by two bouncing bhangra percussionists and a vocalist who looks like he would be at home in a Bollywood music video? Its live performances are all about energy. Delhi 2 Dublin captures the crowd – holding everyone hostage.
So what does Delhi 2 Dublin sound like? Well, they sound like what you would expect from a group who describes themselves as playing Delhi and Dublin fusion music – electric sitar, Celtic fiddle, electronic mixing, reggae, Punjabi and English vocals and a whole bunch of percussion on the likes of the tabla and dhol.
Delhi 2 Dublin is the new sound of music. Blending east and west, electronic and acoustic, mainstream and underground, the five- member D2D crew takes listeners on a wild and borderless trip with their global sounds. The band fuses the traditional sounds of tabla, dhol, fiddle, and sitar with cutting edge DJ aesthetics, to create a highly charged, multi-cultural dance celebration.
A free after party with Izzy Wise and Benjah Ninjah follows Delhi 2 Dublin’s 10 p.m. show Friday.
The fall of disco and the commercial demise of punk rock music took a turn in the early 1980s into what was dubbed, “one of the most romantic periods in the history of popular music.” Musicians abandoned their guitars and traditional drum kits for the latest in state-of-the-art technology: synthesizers, drum machines and special effects.
They donned a more androgynous look known as “new romantic.” The result was music alive with sensual crooning, searing synthesizers, pulsating bass lines and pounding electronic drums, carrying a message of love, politics and sexual being. Thus was created a “new wave” of pop and dance music, when bands like Duran Duran, Eurythmics, The Cure, and the Thompson Twins were on the cutting edge. The 1980s also saw a multitude of unforgettable one-hit-wonders such as Modern English, Gary Numan, and Dexy’s Midnight Runners.
Tainted Love, a seven-piece group from San Francisco, brings folks back to the days when keyboards ruled the airwaves, cascading hairdos were commonplace and outlandish fashions lit up the pioneering early days of MTV.
The band plays Saturday at 9 p.m. in the Crystal Bay Casino Crown Room. Tickets are $25 and can be bought online at http://www.cbc.tickets.musictoday.com. The concert – featuring a free after party with Timeteo Gigante and Rad Habbit – is also a SnowFest! 2013 event.
