EDITOR’S NOTE: The Bonanza incorrectly printed the date for this year’s event in a previous article. The 2014 Dog Days of Fall will indeed take place Oct. 11. The Bonanza regrets the error.

The seventh annual Dog Days of Fall event will take place on Saturday, Oct. 11, from 10 a.m. to noon at Burnt Cedar Pool in Incline Village.

Last year, more than 145 dogs romped and swam on their special day, which happens just once a year. The Burnt Cedar pool closed to humans on Labor Day, but will reopen on Oct. 11 for canines only.

Whether you have a Mutt, a Mix or a Purebred, bring your pup for a good time in the water or just to socialize with other 4-legged friends on the pool deck.

As usual, there will be numerous contests for the dogs including “Best Costume,” “Best Trick,” “Owner Look-Alike,” “Wildest Belly Flop,” “Fastest Swimmer,” “Show Stopper” (best looking dog), “Most Unforgettable” (best personality and attitude) and more.

Awards will be given to the Top Dogs in each category. Contests will be judged by members of the community including Kelly Neville, Michelle Okashima, Nicole Schreiber, Stefan Tampe and Linda Woglom.

Most importantly, the event is all about the dogs! This is the only day of the year that canines get to enjoy the pool, so don’t let your pooch miss the fun. All dogs must be current on their vaccines and no aggressive animals will be allowed. Please help us maintain our perfect record of no fights.

For the seventh year, IVGID Parks and Recreation will host this community favorite, with Micki Napp returning as our Mistress of Ceremonies and Gwynne Cunningham as Dog Days Operations Manager.

Because wet dogs tend to shake, come prepared to get wet while you enjoy the Parade of Dogs around the pool, the music and the gorgeous views of the lake.

This is a frenzy of wet and wooly dogs. And best of all, it’s free.

RULES OF PLAY

1. Arrive with your dog on a leash and go directly to the Registration Desk to complete paperwork regarding vaccines. Once inside the pool area, you may remove the leash, assuming your dog responds to voice commands. Please keep an eye on your dog at all times.

2. Be sure your dog knows how to get out the pool. If your dog cannot use the ladder or find the stairs, you need to pull the dog from the pool which can be very difficult when the dog is wet, slippery and heavy.

3. No “Brown Outs”! Each owner is responsible for Poop Patrol and bags will be provided.

4. Vaccines must be current. Only healthy dogs should participate.

5. Because play can be rowdy, puppies and fragile dogs are safest close to owners. AGGRESSIVE DOGS ARE NOT WELCOME AND WILL BE ASKED TO LEAVE. Please help make this a safe and fun day for well-behaved dogs and owners.

6. Although dogs are invited to use the pool, the Burnt Cedar Beach is off limits please.

7. Due to the potential rowdy play of the dogs, small children are at risk. Parents are advised to watch and protect their young ones.
