TRUCKEE, Calif. — Three residents are in the race to fill two seats on the Truckee Fire Protection District Board of Directors.

The general election is set for Nov. 8. For the Truckee Fire race, residents will be asked to vote for two of the three candidates; the top two vote-getters will be elected to the positions.

The two open seats are currently held by Ron Perea and Robert Snyder. Perea is the lone director to file for reelection.

In California, early voting for the general elections began Oct. 10.

To better inform readers voting early or heading to the polls on Election Day, the Sierra Sun reached out to the candidates a couple weeks ago and asked each to provide a short biography, as well as a 500-word maximum candidate statement.

Below, you can read the candidates’ statements, which are printed verbatim (including typos and grammar errors) in random order:

Full name: Erin Prado

Age: 33

Full-time residence in the region: Olympic Heights

How long you have been a resident: 32 years

Current occupation: Restaurant Manager

Formal education: Interior Designers Institute

Current and previous political/governmental experience: West Shore Association Member

Candidate statement:

I have been a resident of Tahoe-Truckee for 31 years. As the General Manager at my family’s restaurant, I understand the importance of operating the Truckee Fire Protection District as a business. I will use my management skills to practice ethical and effective ways to run the district.

My primary responsibilities for the continued success of the district includes respecting and keeping with the transparency and accountability already in place, as well, as providing critical financial oversight.

I am committed to ensuring the community receives a high level of service that remains focused on areas of importance that effect our community directly. My mission is to work hard for our town to ensure we are providing the best progressive fire suppression, rescue and emergency medical services available.

I have been attending Fire board meetings, in addition to financial meetings, since July. I am not a one-issue candidate. I have been actively gaining information in all aspects of the district that effect my community and firefighters directly. Which would include budget, training, defensible space programs, Emergency Preparedness and the Community Wildfire Protection Plan.

It would be an honor to represent our town through the Truckee Fire Protection District Board. I am seeking election to the Truckee Fire Board, with a promise that I will be fully committed to working towards the continued success and safety of our great community. I am willing to sit, discuss, and explore all avenues of any issues that arise pertaining to our district. A role as a board member should include responsibility in terms of financial management and transparency. A board member is responsible for the overall direction of the district; and it is to provide good government. Your vote will ensure I can take these actions for my community.

“The “mission” of the Truckee Fire Protection district is to protect life, property and wild lands in order to enhance the economic, environmental, and social beliefs derived from these resources within the boundaries of the district.” It would be a priority and my responsibility as a board member to help our staff fulfill this mission and continue to provide our district with a high level of service.

I thank you for your support and would appreciate your vote in November.

Name: Gerald W. Herrick

Age: 72

Full-time residence in the region: Did not provide

How long you have been a resident: Full-time 12 year Truckee resident

Current occupation: Retired Public School Teacher/Administrator

Formal education: Master’s Degree

Current and previous political/government experience: Truckee Fire Protection District (2010-2014); Public School Teacher/Administrator (40 years); Lake Valley Fire Protection District Board (3 years); Truckee Tahoe Airport Advisory Team (6 years); Tahoe Forest Hospital Measure C Oversight Committee (5 years); “Truckee Day” Leadership Team (8 years).

Candidate statement:

Having completed a productive 4-year term (2010-2014) as a board member of the Truckee Fire Protection District (TFPD), I am running for re-election to ensure that the district continues to provide the highest level of services.

The mission of the TFPD firefighters and paramedics is to protect our life, property, and the surrounding forests. It is the board’s responsibility to empower staff to accomplish this mission through support and financial oversight. As your representative, I intend to make sure this occurs. I’ll be an independent voice for the community always working to ensure that your tax dollars are spent wisely and productively.

My Plan: I want to ensure that the TFPD continues to provide first-rate services now and in the future. My vision for the future addresses command staff succession, recruitment, equipment replacement, station maintenance, and the future building needs of the district.

The TFPD must resolve the Placer County tax allocation issue. Historically, we have not received our fair share of Placer County fire protection funds. The Placer County underfunding could be as much as $1.6 million, which the TFPD could put to very good use. I led the effort to establish a citizen committee that has been assisting the Board on finding a solution to this vitally important tax issue.

I will work to reintroduce the wood chipping program which would help decrease the fire danger to our community.

I can say without reservation that the TFPD training program is outstanding. District staff have designed and implemented a training program that ensures that our firefighters and paramedics are at the cutting edge of preparedness. I will continue to support policies that keep this excellent training program first rate.

Community Involvement: It is important that your elected officials are involved in their community. As you will note above, I have been heavily involved in many issues and committees that directly impact our community. This type of hands-on involvement has enabled me to hear your concerns and bring them to the board.

Endorsement: The Contractors Association of Truckee Tahoe Political Action Committee announced on October 11th that they had unanimously selected me as their only candidate endorsement for the board of the TFPD. I welcome their endorsement.

I ask for your vote so that I can serve another 4 years and continue the work we have begun. I promise to ensure the TFPD continues to provide the highest level of service possible. I commit to focus attention on the Placer County tax issue, work to reintroduce the wood chipping program, and be an independent voice for the community.

I would be honored to receive your vote.

Candidate statement:

I HAVE BEEN A BOARD MEMBER IN GOOD STANDING SINCE BEING ELECTED. I WANT TO CONTINUE MY SERVICE AND DEDICATION TO THE DISTRICT AND CITIZENS, MAKING DECISIONS THAT WILL BENEFIT THE DEPARTMENT AND DISTRICT. I WILL CONTINUE TO HELP KEEP THE DEPARTMENT AND BOARD TRANSPARENT, INSURING THAT WE CONTINUE TO GET THE BEST TRAINING AND EQUIPMENT TO KEEP OUR PERSONNEL SAFE WHILE SERVING THE DISTRICT. I AM WELL KNOWN IN THE DISTRICT BECAUSE OF MY MANY YEARS WITH THE SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT, I AM KNOWN AS A PERSON THAT CAN BE TRUSTED AND APPROACHABLE. ALL CONCERNS BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION WILL CONTINUE TO BE PASSED ON TO THE PROPER CHANNELS. I HAVE NO PERSONAL AGENDA THE REASON I WANT TO CONTINUE TO SERVE ON THE BOARD,IS MY CONCERN FOR THE DISTRICT AND PUBLIC, TO MAKE SURE THAT TAX PAYERS ARE GETTING THE SERVICE THAT IS EXPECTED. I AM NOT THE TYPE OF PERSON THAT HAS ONE GOAL, I AM NOT ON THE BOARD TO PLEASE ONE OR TWO ORGANIZATIONS I AM ON THE BOARD TO BENEFIT ALL TAX PAYERS. I WILL CONTINUE TO HELP EDUCATE OUR NEIGHBORS AND VISITORS ABOUT DEFENSIBLE SPACE, WHICH IS A HIGH CONCERN IN OUR DANGEROUS FIRE AREA.

WHILE SERVING ON THE BOARD I HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN THE ANNEXATION OF DONNER SUMMIT FIRE DEPARTMENT, THAT BROGHT MORE SERVICE AND EQUIPMENT TO DONNER SUMMIT.

I HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN THE HIRING AND PROMOTING OF 3 FIRE CHIEFS. WHILE SERVING ON THE BOARD, THE GRAND JURY COMMEND THE DISTRICT ON FOLLOWING THEIR RECOMMENDATIONS AFTER THEIR INVESTIGATION. MY CONTINUED SERVICE ON THE BOARD WILL INSURE THAT THE DISTRICT IS REPRESENTED BY A PERSON WHO CARES FOR OUR COMMUNITY AND IS WILLING AND ABLE TO SERVE ON THE BOARD.

IN MY MANY YEARS OF LIVING IN OUR COMMUNITY I HAVE SEEN TRUCKEE FIRE DEPARTMENT EVOLVE FROM AN ALL VOLUNTEER DEPARTMENT, (WHICH I WAS A MEMBER) TO A FULL TIME PAID DEPARTMENT WITH 24 HOUR COVERAGE AT ALL STATIONS. FROM AN ALL VOLUNTEER WITH NO MEDICAL SERVICE TO A FULL STATE OF THE ART AMBULANCE SERVICE. THIS HAPPENED BECAUSE OF CONCERNED CITIZENS AND THE DEDICATION OF ALL THE PERSONNEL AT THE TIME.

I AM PROUD TO BE A BOARD MEMBER OF SUCH GREAT ORGANIZATION, I WORK WELL WITH OTHERS AND I AM OPENED MINED. WE HAVE FIVE BOARD MEMBERS, TOGETHER WE WILL MAKE THE RIGHT DECISIONS.

ON NOVEMBER 8TH PLEASE VOTE FOR ME, RON PEREA, SO I CAN CONTINUE MY LEGACY.
