Fatal wreck near Donner Summit shutting down westbound I-80 for hours

TRUCKEE, Calif. — A fatal vehicle accident Thursday afternoon will force officials to shut down westbound Interstate 80 near Donner Summit for as many as 10 hours.

According to a California Highway Patrol statement at about 3:30 p.m., the closure on I-80 westbound, west of Castle Peak, is expected to last 9 to 10 hours as crews “continue to investigate the cause of the collision.”

“The collision is a confirmed fatality,” officials report.

According to Caltrans, a driver was killed when the victim’s vehicle crashed crashed into two Caltrans heavy equipment vehicles.

One Caltrans worker was reportedly taken to a local hospital for evaluation and released.

“If you are traveling westbound through Truckee today, expect long delays as we are diverting traffic on Donner Pass Road (Old US 40),” according to a CHP Facebook post. “Tractor trailers are being turned around and sent back to Reno to wait for the roadway to re-open.”

According to CHP, the accident occurred near Boreal Mountain Resort.

The incident was cleared up by about 10:30 p.m., officials said.
