Fire agencies promote safety at area elementary schools
TRUCKEE, Calif. — Interagency fire department cooperation was demonstrated during March at Truckee and Glenshire Elementary Schools.
Truckee Fire Protection District, Northstar Fire Department, U.S. Forest Service, along with Calfire teamed up to promote fire safety for 760 students in 35 kindergarten through third-grade classes.
Kids participated in fire safety themes such as outdoor fire safety while camping, putting water on minor burns, “Stop-Drop-and-Roll,” along with reporting fires by calling 9-1-1.
Indoor fire safety included crawling low under smoke, having two ways out of your residence, checking smoke and carbon monoxide detectors (CO), remembering your address, having a meeting place, and never going back into a burning building.
The students practiced their skill of crawling low under the simulated “Smoke Sheet,” demonstrated by a firefighter dressed in full gear so the children learned never to be afraid of firefighters who are coming to rescue them.
Special emphasis was placed on practicing a fire escape plan with their parents, having a designated meeting place area, and never hiding from firefighters while waiting for rescue.
Some homework included reciting their address and phone number to teachers before receiving goodie bags filled with fire safety messages.
Kindergarten and first-grade students delighted in meeting “Smokey Bear” while chanting his No. 1 rule: “Never Play with Matches or Lighters!”
To help integrate the safety messages, children are encouraged to draw a fire safety poster, that if chosen will be displayed at different areas locally this summer.
Thanks to all of the teachers, parents, and volunteers for supporting the fire safety program.
