Fitting farewell to Old Glory
Special to the Sun
The Incline Village Library is proud to have been selected as a spot to house one of our community’s Freedom Boxes.
You may be asking yourself, as was I, what exactly is a Freedom Box? A Freedom Box is a place to dispose of used, worn-out American flags.
The U.S. Flag Code (74 U.S.C. § 8(k)) states: The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.
In order to obtain the achievement of Eagle Scout Andreas Mourelatos of BSA Troop 37 designed and placed these boxes throughout our community so that you may have a place to bring your old American flag.

Be certain that your flag will be disposed of properly and with dignity by Boy Scout Troop 37 at the annual flag retirement ceremony held during Red, White and Tahoe Blue’s Fourth of July celebration.
Locations of Freedom Boxes are the Parasol Foundation Building (948 Incline Way), Incline Village Library (845 Alder Ave.), Incline Village General Improvement District–Recreation Center (980 Incline Way), and the Incline Village NLT Fire Station (866 Oriole Way).
Residents are encouraged to drop off used American flags at any of these locations, at any time of the year. To learn more about proper disposal of the American flag, or how to properly display our country’s flag, stop by your local library for more information.
All ages welcome.
