TAHOE-TRUCKEE, Calif. — Local Tax Aide volunteers with the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) are again offering free tax preparation assistance for low- and middle-income individuals in the Tahoe-Truckee region.
Georgia Smith, Karen Doughty, Hollis Johnson, Frank Schneller and Irene Schneller are the local Tax Aide volunteers, and this year, services will be provided at the Truckee Donner PUD in Truckee and North Tahoe Family Resource Center in Kings Beach.
Smith, a retired FDIC bank examiner and local bookkeeper, has been volunteering through the AARP program for the past several years. Johnson has a bachelor degree in mathematics and works for large computer networking vendors.
Doughty, a 30-year Tahoe resident, volunteers to support the community. Frank Schneller is a CPA and is active in community affairs, and Irene Schneller is a retired Spanish teacher.
Each year, the volunteers take an IRS-sponsored class and exam to ensure that they are up to date on the latest changes to the tax code.
“There is a real need in the community for tax education and assistance,” Smith said. “We love helping people in financial need get the tax refunds they are entitled to. We look forward to seeing our clients year after year.”
Services will be available to locals of all income levels and ages, as long as their taxes do not include complex or business returns.
Taxes are filed electronically, ensuring refunds are received quickly, and volunteers will file both federal and state returns. Spanish language translation services are available at both sites.
This year, walk-ins on a first-come, first-served basis will be accepted at the PUD building at 11570 Donner Pass Road from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the following dates: Feb. 6, 14, 20, 28; March 6, 14, 20, 28; and April 3 and 11.
Services will be by appointment only at the North Tahoe Family Resource Center at 265 Bear St. on the following dates: Feb. 4, 11, 18, 25; March 4, 11, 18, 25; and April 1, 8 and 15. Call 530-546-0952 to schedule an appointment.
