CRYSTAL BAY, Nev. – The Monophonics, a 7-year-old psychedelic soul band from San Francisco, play a paid show Friday night in the Crystal Bay Casino’s Crown Room.

According to press materials, the band’s music also has been called black rock, which mixes the characteristics of soul with psychedelic rock, which came to prominence in the late 1960s and continued into the 1970s, playing a major role in the development of soul and funk music.

Monophonics were formed in 2005 originally as an instrumental ensemble, according to the band’s website, and within the last two years the band has come to find its own sound.

The foundation is the blistering funky drums of Austin Bohlman and soulful bass playing of Myles O’Mahony; fuzzy echo guitars by Ian McDonald; a powerhouse horn section made up of Ryan Scott and Alex Baky; and the swirling organ and dynamic vocals of Kelly Finnigan.

Raised amid the Bay Area’s rich musical culture, Monophonics has proudly carried on the tradition of music native to their hometown, which flourished during the birth of funk music and psychedelia.

As a mainstay of San Francisco venues such as The Independent and Boom Boom Room, the Monophonics have created a national buzz and fervent local following, sharing the stage with Budos Band, Orgone, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Kings Go Forth and Soulive.

According to the band’s Facebook page, the band is scheduling a limited edition 6-song cover EP this winter, another full length LP in the summer, more US, Canada and Europe shows plus festivals with the hope of exploring new markets like South America, Japan and Australia.
