This Sunday, critically acclaimed drum educator Mike Adamo will helping people tighten up their grooves, strengthen their internal clocks, improve their coordination and funkify their drumming in a hip-hop and funk training camp clinic at the Tahoe Music Institute.
Adamo, a leading educator is in his field, is the author of “The Breakbeat Bible,” which presents a unique approach to the fundamentals of breakbeat drumming and provides drummers with insight on keeping the acoustic drum set relevant in the post-modern digital age.
During the clinic Adamo will teach his bulletproof funk and hip-hop drum techniques, discuss how to play drums with electronic music, and illustrate some of his proven teaching strategies for those looking for innovative ways to teach their own drum students.
“The Breakbeat Bible” has been extremely well received in the international drumming community, where it received a 5-star review in “Modern Drummer” magazine and was voted second place in the 2012 “Modern Drummer” Reader’s Poll for Best Educational Book.
Adamo is also a contributing writer for “Modern Drummer,” and his 6-part Funk Drumming Education Series can be found throughout the 2013 issues of the magazine.
As a performer, Adamo prides himself in drawing energy from the audience and channeling it back tenfold, no matter which band he is backing at the time.
He is perhaps most well known for his powerful yet intricately understated rock drumming with the local rock/hip-hop/neo-blues band Mama’s Cookin’, and he is currently performing and touring with the internationally acclaimed Peter Joseph Burtt and the King Tide (world/blues/dub), The Funky Miracle (a tribute to New Orleans funk pioneers, The Meters), The Gravity Pimps (1960’s-1970’s era funk/soul throwback), The Ben Fuller Band (power pop/indie rock), The Truth Cartel (funk/jazz/fusion), The Emily Tessmer Band (pop/rock), and the LifePoint Church Praise Band (praise/gospel). Adamo is also an active independent session drummer.
Sunday’s camp is 3-4:30 p.m. at Tahoe Music Institute at 2810 Lake Forest Road in Tahoe City and is open to the public and will be geared toward intermediate and advanced drummers. However, beginning or aspiring drummers as well as non-drumming music educators are encouraged to attend.
The clinic is free, but Tahoe Music Institute will collect a suggested donation of $10 to anyone wanting to thank Adamo for sharing his time and knowledge with the community.
Adamo will be available to teach private lessons after the clinic. Call the Tahoe Music Institute at 530-581-0618 or visit http://www.tahoemusicinstitute.com for details.
