IVGID Tip: 4 ways to enjoy spring skiing at Lake Tahoe

This year, Retro Ski Day is March 14 at Diamond Peak.

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — Spring in Tahoe is the time of year you can ski, golf, paddle and bike all in the same day. The weather may be unpredictable but the days are usually filled with sunshine.

Here are some tips for skiing or riding on a typical spring day:

1. Equipment: Grab your all-mountain skis, as they will handle the best in variable conditions, and wax your skis or board with a warm snow wax. The snow could start out hardpack in the morning, or at the top, and be creamy in the afternoon, or at the base. Make sure your edges are sharp for the firmer snow and buckle those ski boots tighter as it warms up since the heat can soften the plastic.

2. Attire: Dress for variable conditions. The weather changes quickly in the mountains, especially in the spring. You could be all bundled up in the morning and down to a T-shirt by afternoon. Opt for a thin long-sleeved base layer over a T-shirt to protect your skin from the sun or a fall. Carry a backpack or rent a locker to keep those layers nearby as the wind could pick up in the afternoon.

3. Fun: Spring is all about getting silly on the slopes, fun events, crazy costumes, neon onsies and early après. Diamond Peak is holding some wacky events this March like Retro Ski Day (March 14), Undy Ski Day (March 28) and the Dummy Downhill (March 29). Check out event calendars for the forecast of fun and invite your pals to join you.

4. Deals: Now that the holidays are over, prices have dropped and most resorts are offering killer deals. Diamond Peak offers a Local’s Lunch Ticket, free birthday ticket, Three & Free Guarantee lesson series, and other great promotions. Look for specials on resort websites or browse the internet.

Remember to drink extra water, follow the responsibility code, and slather on that sunscreen to keep the fun going all spring.
