Ladies, get your paddle power on
Soroptimist International of Truckee Donner is the recipient beneficiary of the inaugural “Butterfly Effect Tahoe,” a non-competitive aloha watersports event for women.
The event’s mission is to empower and inspire women in sports and give back to local charities.
The program creates an environment where participants gain confidence to achieve a goal in a supportive group setting. Do you paddle, windsurf, kite, kayak or swim? Are you a beginner, local shredder, or maybe a pro? It doesn’t matter: all of these sports and experience levels are welcome.
Butterfly Effect Tahoe will be held Sept. 6, at the Tahoe Vista Recreation, located at 7010 North Lake Blvd. Registration is open online at http://betheeffect.com/tahoe-event-day.

Check in and event-day signups will begin at 9 a.m. on the day of the event.
“Water sports have empowered and inspired me to live out my hopes and dreams and giving back to surf communities is a passion I wish to share with many,” said Butterfly Effect founder Tatiana Howard, a “professional water woman” born and raised on Maui.
Howard selected Soroptimist International of Truckee Donner to receive a portion of event proceeds. The Truckee Donner Club President Linnis Jellinek explained the Soroptimist Core Values include gender equality, empowerment and education. Soroptimist sponsors programs that lead to social and economic empowerment.
“Any activity that helps a woman or girl develop a positive self-image and develop confidence to pursue a dream falls squarely within the Soroptimist mission,” said Jellinek. “I am excited to see this event come to Lake Tahoe so that women in California and Nevada can share this journey in the most beautiful alpine lake setting.”
FEMALE PADDLE POWER
Butterfly Effect Tahoe is the first ever event on the Mainland, pivoted on a non-competitive aloha paddle. The actual paddle event will consist of a paddle ranging from 1 to 4 miles, depending on ability levels of participants.
Women will have the option to use any sort of “woman powered” paddle vessel such as kayaks, canoes and stand-up paddleboards. The event will continue with an Aloha theme beach cleanup and festival. There will be clinics on land and on water plus yoga, music, dancing, local food, raffle prizes, fashion show, photo booth fun and more.
Registration for The Butterfly Effect Tahoe is now open. The first 150 participants to register online will receive an event lycra rashguard and goody bag.
The Soroptimist International of Truckee Donner holds monthly club meetings noon on second Thursdays at Zano’s Restaurant, 11401 Donner Pass Road in Truckee. Soroptimist (soroptimist.org) is an international volunteer service organization for business and professional women who work to improve the lives of women and girls through programs leading to social and economic empowerment.
