TAHOE/TRUCKEE – The first significant winter storm of 2013 is expected to bring a foot of snow by Wednesday evening throughout the greater Truckee/Tahoe region, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

A winter weather advisory will be in effect from 10 p.m. Tuesday through 10 p.m. Wednesday, according to NWS.

Eight to 14 inches of snow is expected above 7,000 feet, with 3 to 8 inches possible at lake level. The highest amounts are expected along and west of Highway 89, according to NWS.

“Snow will develop late (Tuesday night) with a period of moderate to heavy snow overnight into Wednesday morning,” according to the advisory. “Snow showers will continue Wednesday afternoon and evening.”

Wind gusts with the storm are expected to hit 45 mph, with Sierra ridge gusts approaching 100 mph.

The conditions will likely produce slick driving conditions across the Lake Tahoe Basin. Travel over Sierra passes may become difficult, with chain controls likely.
