Letter to the Editor: A different opinion on gun control

In El Dorado County Sheriff John D’Agostini’s Jan. 17 letter on http://www.sierrasun.com about gun control, he stated, “It is well known and proven with facts, not emotional inference, that gun control of any kind, has no effect on the reduction of crime, anywhere.”

He should read the Jan. 16 New York Times article by John Howard, a former prime minister of Australia. After a 1996 massacre with 35 people being killed with an assault rifle, a law was passed which banned assault rifles.

In the 18 years prior to this law, there were 13 massacres involving four or more people. Since this law was passed, there have been no massacres. Suicide rates have also dropped by 68 percent.
