Once again, the 284-acre parcel east of Glenshire is under review for possible development of 185 lots. This land has seen 3 proposals for development since the 1970s, all have resulted in failure. The DEIR (Draft Environmental Impact Report) has been released by the Town of Truckee, and the community now has until March 1 to weigh in and comment on the Canyon Springs proposal.

SOSG (Save Open Space Glenshire) and MAPF (Mountain Area Preservation Foundation) have been looking at alternate uses of the land, No. 1 being a buyout to preserve the area as a permanent open space. This would be good for the Glenshire region, as research shows that property values in communities adjacent to dedicated open space can rise as much as 20 percent.

With the current glut of available lots in Truckee that are currently not built upon, to add close to 200 more units would not help Truckee economically, or improve the quality of life for both the people or indigenous animals that live here.

The community of Truckee needs to get involved and look at the implications of unbridled development. If Canyon Springs goes in, much more development would likely follow in the Eastern Truckee area. Truckee will never be the same. If we must develop, transfer of development rights for infill development closer to the center of town, rather than creating urban sprawl, would be more in line with the town’s general plan.

We have to start thinking responsibly regarding all this endless development. We must look at what’s best for the environment, and our quality of life. We are destroying the beauty, peace and tranquility we came here for.
