Letter to the Editor: Do not support KSL’s greed-fueled development
After reading about the proposed new development at Squaw Valley, I am mystified that anyone would support it other than those with a direct financial interest in it. Do we really need a hugely out-of-scale “Mountain Adventure Center” near Tahoe? Do we really need a water park and more than a thousand new condos?
The irony of a water park at Tahoe … is it only me?
Squaw’s Chevis Hosea invites us to have a look at KSL’s (the owner of Squaw) website, so I did. In it, they say they:
• Calibrate operational efficiencies to produce industry-leading margins.
• Enhance existing revenue bases through market re-positioning and employing specialized sales resources. Cultivate new business opportunities to maximize real estate.
• Optimize real estate development opportunities.
This is clearly a big developer who’s all about the money, not the environment, and who doesn’t give a hoot about this area’s history or the unique mountain ambiance that has been part of the Tahoe area since time immemorial. And agreeing to reduce some building heights seems to me to be simply that shopworn ploy of giving a little to get a lot.
Lastly, one of KSL’s long-time development partners is East West Partners, who not so long ago lost The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe at Northstar to foreclosure. That seems to me to be a pretty clear signal that this area does not need and cannot support gargantuan new projects that destroy the character of this beautiful place in a greed-fueled attempt to put more money into big development’s pockets.
