Letter to the Editor: How about this idea for the Veterans Hall
EDITOR’S NOTE: The Sun contacted Tahoe Forest Church on Thursday; a spokesperson said the church has not made an offer, nor has one been discussed, regarding the Truckee Veterans Hall. Results of an appraisal done on the hall late last year can be found through the following shortened web link: http://bit.ly/Wx7x8W
This is in response to sale of Veterans Hall. What happened to competitive bidding?
We would buy the property for the pittance of $545,000 the church will pay and change nothing. We would preserve Native American cultural site. We would preserve gothic-style building. We would leave untouched the plaques to the honored fallen in their concrete perpetuity. The flag and pole would remain. A solar photovoltaic roof could power the building and 8-10 homes for free. The historic Rocking Stone could stay unsplit into a tiny fraction of history.
We would donate property to town of Truckee with a deed that could not be swept aside by petty council persons claiming it would be too old to count (I thought the older the provenance or conveyance, the better).
In short, lets keep it as is for nothing, versus major change to parking lots, untold traffic complications, building changes, skyline blowouts and no flag over town. This building was built by and for veterans on land given to veterans. We would be glad to bid in an honest and fair environment.
A deal engineered by park and recreation is not a fair process. Come on Truckee – let’s get together and save some of our history for posterity.
