Work on Envision Donner Pass Road, a project meant to improve road conditiosn between Coldstream Road and the McIver roundabout will continue this summer with sidewalk improvements.

Truckee will continue with improvements on Donner Pass Road this summer with overhead utility poles removed along with sidewalk and crosswalk improvements completed by winter.

The town has funding available for roundabouts along Donner Pass Road at Northwoods Boulevard and Coldstream Road and for sidewalk improvements, for which the town received a $1.5 million grant from the Highway Safety Improvement Program.

According to Scott Mathot, associate engineer for the Town of Truckee, construction on the Northwoods roundabout should begin during the summer of 2020. However, the project is still in design phase.

The Envision Donner Pass Road project was conceptualized in 2015 and began in July 2018, with the grounding of all overhead utilities along the road from Richards Boulevard to State Route 89. Through community meetings it was determined that residents were interested in roundabouts sidewalks, bike lanes, crosswalks and medians along the road.

"There's overwhelming support for implementation of roundabouts, which would really enhance the existing general plan policy of replacing traffic signals with roundabouts when appropriate," said Mathot.

The report included options for smaller additional roundabouts along the road. According to Jeff Loux, Truckee town manager, the reason for the smaller roundabouts is they would facilitate the installation of median along Donner Pass Road.

"The continuous median was of concern to the public in terms of how it may limit access to and from businesses," said Loux. "The small roundabouts provide opportunities for U-turns."

While there are plans for installing those roundabouts, Mathot said the report is not a final plan.

"It's there for guidance and reference for you to utilize to benefit the corridor," Mathot told town council members. "Ultimately it'll be up to council to decide."

The entire project aims at completing road improvements from Coldstream Road to the McIver roundabout.

The western segment of Donner Pass Road has been the town's first priority with improvements to the eastern segment to come later. These will include utility undergrounding as well as sidewalk improvements.
