Multiple big rig wreck at Donner Summit closes eastbound Interstate 80

NEVADA COUNTY, Calif. – A major wreck Thursday morning involving five big rigs has closed eastbound Interstate 80 in the Castle Peak area, officials said.

“There are no fatalities, but one truck driver was airlifted to (a regional hospital),” said Liza Whitmore, Caltrans spokeswoman.

Caltrans is advising motorists to expect major travel delays while emergency crews work to clear the area, according to a 9:30 a.m. statement.

“There is no estimated time of reopening the highway,” officials said. “Authorities are turning back all big rigs at Kingvale. Cars and small trucks are being detoured to old U.S. Highway 40 in the Soda Springs area.”

Message boards on the highway will be used to update motorists on the schedule and for detour information. For real-time traffic, click on Caltrans QuickMap at
