North Tahoe Fire gets grant for 9 new firefighters
TAHOE CITY, Calif. — North Tahoe Fire Protection District was recently named the recipient of a 2013 Federal Emergency Management Agency grant for $1.6M over two years.
The federal “SAFER” grant will allow the district to hire nine additional firefighters, officials said in a press release, “in order to provide adequate safety staffing and increase coverage at two of our five fire stations currently staffed only part time.”
“With what is promising to be a long fire season, this additional staffing could not have come at a better time for us,” Chief Michael Schwartz said in a statement.
The North Tahoe Fire Protection District covers 31 square miles along the North and West shores of Lake Tahoe, as well as the community of Alpine Meadows.
“We have been applying for this grant for years,” Schwartz said. “Our staff put in a tremendous amount of work to successfully secure federal funding and I applaud them for submitting an excellent application.”
