Political satirist to lower the boom at North Tahoe
CRYSTAL BAY, Nev. – Super Bowl Sunday was followed by a morose Monday in San Francisco when the city’s resident political satirist spoke on a telephone.”People are nursing psychic hangovers because they won five Super Bowls in a row, so they thought this one was a lock,” Will Durst said, referring to Baltimore’s 34-31 victory over the 49ers. “They were already planning parades.”A native of the state called America’s Dairyland, Durst moved to the city decades ago, smitten with its eccentric culture, crazy politics and sports teams. He swapped Wisconsin cheese for California wine. Or is it whine?”You talk about who was the better team, but it all comes down to whether or not the referee throws a flag,” Durst lamented.Solace for the funnyman is the state of politics, which provides more satirical fodder than – dare we pile on? – the government does cheese. After all, in New Jersey, Geraldo Rivera is contemplating a run for U.S. Senate, where the majority leader, Harry Reid, backed off a filibuster showdown as his first move of the new session.”Once again, they showed a lack of vertebrae,” said Durst, who advocates stem cell research in order to create a spine for Democrats.Durst said he has new material for upcoming standup appearances, one at Crystal Bay and two in Reno. He wrote a one-man show targeting baby boomers, “Where’s My Jetpack?””They are still doing drugs,” Durst said about baby boomers. “Only now, there’s a co-pay. One good thing about getting old is you only need nine books in your library. As long as you remember to read them alphabetically, they always seem new to you.”A columnist for Lake Tahoe Action, Durst likely will return to South Shore in the late spring for a weeklong run at Harveys’ Improv.
