Storm brings a layer of powder, low temperatures

This past weekends weather brought a couple inches of snow and increasingly cold temperatures.

“It was a cold event, but not much in accumulation of snow,” said Evan LaGuardia, meteorologist for the Reno National Weather Service.

On Saturday, Dec. 2, mountain areas around 8,000 feet received 3-6 inches of snowfall, mostly along the crest of the Sierra. The valley received about an inch, just coating the area in a layer of powder.

According to the Reno National Weather Service, snow levels have dropped below 5,500 feet, but this recent storm didn’t have enough moisture support to create precipitation.

Since the storm has since passed, skies are clear and temperatures have really dropped. Lows are down in the single digits in most Tahoe and Truckee areas. The Truckee airport had a low of two degrees on Sunday night, Dec. 3.

The long term forecast for the rest of the week includes dry and cold weather.

“We might have problems with inversions, where temperature increases with height, which can cause bad air quality conditions,” informed LaGuardia.
