Sunnyside’s Mountain Grille boasts new decor at Lake Tahoe
TAHOE CITY, Calif. — Sunnyside Restaurant and Lodge, a West Shore Lake Tahoe landmark for more than 60 years, announced the re-opening of its Mountain Grill restaurant and bar after an extensive renovation and refurbishment. T S Restaurants, the parent company of Sunnyside, contracted Spirit Interior Design of Truckee to design and execute a number of interior improvements incorporating contemporary elements into the restaurant’s classic lodge style.
“It is important to T S Restaurants and to our landlord group to keep evolving Sunnyside,” said Bill Parsons, chairman of T S Restaurants. “We wanted to give the Mountain Grill a more modern, vibrant ambiance but without losing the casual, inviting atmosphere that generations have come to love at this iconic Lake Tahoe destination. Our design team did an excellent job enhancing and updating the spaces while continuing the legacy of Sunnyside.”
The new Mountain Grill’s refreshed look includes all new tables and chairs, artwork, lighting, carpeting, soft lounge seating around the natural stone fireplace. The bar itself was completely re-done with new wrought iron and glass shelving along with a “leather” granite bar top. Architectural highlights include hand-blown glass sconces, a glass and pine tree stump base communal table and photographic prints from Gallery Keoki in Squaw Valley.
“We’ve taken what was already one of Lake Tahoe’s favorite gathering places and made it new and exciting,” added General Manager Jeff “Ox” Oxandaboure. “This renovation has also inspired us to make other improvements to the guest experience including a new music and sound system and a new menu featuring new American cooking.”
Located two miles south of Tahoe City on West Lake Boulevard, Sunnyside’s lakeside location, combined with dining and guest rooms overlooking Lake Tahoe, has made it a year-round destination celebrating the Tahoe lifestyle. Many of the 23 mountain-inspired guest rooms and suites offer fireplaces and private lake view decks. Along with the casual Mountain Grill, Sunnyside also offers the Lakeside Dining Room. Both dining venues boast panoramic views of the lake, with a large lakeside deck for summer dining.
The adjoining marina offers valet boat parking, fuel dock, powerboat and wave runner rentals, waterski lessons and more. During the winter, lodge guests can take advantage of packages which include the area’s finest skiing.
The history of Sunnyside Resort dates back to 1908, when the original building was constructed as a summer home. It was opened as a lodge in 1946, with seven rooms, two baths, and a small marina. In 1986, Sunnyside was sold to a group of Bay Area families who decided the old building needed a major overhaul after almost 80 years of service. The resort underwent a thorough renovation and once again became a Lake Tahoe social center. The beautifully rebuilt Sunnyside Restaurant and Lodge re-opened in June of 1987.
Since that time Sunnyside has been operated by T S Restaurants, a small, family owned company with 13 restaurants on waterfront sites in California and Hawaii.
