Tahoe Winter Film Series to feature renowned climber Mike Libecki

TAHOE CITY, Calif. — Mike Libecki, a rock climber of international fame and a National Geographic nominee for “Adventurer of the Year,” is coming to Tahoe next week for the third installment in Alpenglow Sports’ Winter Film Series.
Libecki’s “Global Climbing Pursuits” will document his most recent adventures in his quest to complete 100 total expeditions throughout the world.
These include a winter expedition to Siberia, big wall first ascents in subzero Greenland and Baffin Island, an Antarctica ski trip with his 11-year-old daughter, and rock climbing remote Polynesian jungle towers.
A Libecki trip is unique and dangerous, and his excursions to the remote edges of the world also come with a touch of whimsy.
In addition to adventure, his stories are filled with joy — he will enthusiastically tell you about the time he stripped nude on top of a summit or digging larva from his flesh after being impregnated by strange flies in the Papua New Guinea jungle.
“The main components of my trips are remote, untouched, unexplored mystery,” said Libecki, who lives in Salt Lake City. “An adventure for me can’t be an adventure unless there is mystery, unless there is an unknown, something that hasn’t been done before.”
Now in its ninth year, the Alpenglow Sports Winter Film Series has become a staple seasonal event for North Tahoe’s skiing and climbing community.
Designed to inspire, motivate and educate, the event runs from November through March and showcases five famous athletes.
All shows are free and raffle prizes from sponsors are sold to raise funds for local non-profit organizations.
Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue is the beneficiary for Libecki’s show.
The free event for all ages is at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, at Squaw Valley’s Olympic Village Lodge at 1901 Chamonix Place, Olympic Valley.
Alpenglow’s 2014-15 Winter Film Series is presented by KTKE 101.5 and Blue Moon Brewing Company.
