TRUCKEE, Calif. — Kimco Realty Corp. recently announced the opening of a Tesla Motors supercharger station at the Gateway shopping center on Donner Pass Road.

“We consistently evaluate new opportunities to enhance the shopping experience for our customers and providing charging stations for Tesla owners seemed like the next smart choice,” David Jamieson, vice president of leasing and asset management at Kimco, said in a statement.

The station features six supercharger bays with the ability to replenish 50 percent battery capacity for a Tesla Model S in as little as 20 minutes, which is 16 times faster than many of the public electric charging stations now available, according to a press release from Kimco.

Situated behind the Safeway supermarket, the charging bays will be open 24 hours a day.

“Tesla’s significant investment in Truckee supports Truckee Donner PUD’s belief that we are a major stop on the Interstate 80 corridor and a major destination for plug-in electric vehicles,” said Steven Poncelet, public information and conservation manager for Truckee Donner Public Utility District, in a previous Sierra Sun story about Tesla’s plan to open the Truckee station. “Tesla’s investment is because their customers want to drive their plug-in electric vehicles to Truckee/Tahoe.”

The opening of the supercharger site comes days after Tesla chose Northern Nevada for its highly sought $5 billion battery factory.

The electric car company’s gigafactory is projected to create 6,500 direct jobs by 2020, when the up-to-10-million-square-foot lithium ion battery plant is running at full capacity in the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center off Interstate 80, east of Reno.

Kimco Realty Corp. owns Gateway at Donner Pass, located at the intersection of Donner Pass Road and Frates Lane. Kimco is a real estate investment trust headquartered in New Hyde Park, N.Y.
