TRUCKEE, Calif. — Did you know there are now roughly 1,200 butterflies displayed in the Truckee Community Recreation Center?

They include blue, green, neon, bold, and owl-looking butterflies. You heard right. There’s a butterfly whose wings look like an owl’s face.

Thanks to the efforts of Bill McGlashan, the great grandson of Charles McGlashan, and Chaun Mortier, with the Truckee Donner Historical Society, the display now permanently resides at the Truckee Community Recreation Center right next to the Butterfly Preschool.

The collection was previously on display at the Donner Memorial State Park. It was started by Charles McGlashan in 1871 and completed in 1912, and has been on display in California for around 80 years.

The preservation of these butterflies is amazing to see, as they are in their original casing, which was patented by McGlashan.

The Recreation Center at 8924 Donner Pass Road is open, with the display available for viewing from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
