Truckee-Donner Recreation & Park District community pool awarded $4,000 scholarship grant
TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. —Elementary swimmers may be eligible for reduced fee lessons at Truckee’s Community Swimming Pool.
Beginning this May and continuing throughout the calendar year, Truckee-Donner Recreation & Park District will utilize a new $4,000 grant from USA Swimming to offer scholarships to children who might benefit from increased swim skill training. This is the first scholarship of its kind offered by TDRPD.
“Our goal is to develop more swimmers in the community, and the grant enables our mission,” said Amanda Oberacker, pool facility coordinator. “Elementary school kids come [to the pool] with their class without having any previous swim experience. They make great progress within a couple weeks, so the opportunity to reach out to them with a scholarship and provide further instruction can make a huge difference.”
The scholarship will subsidize individual participation in group lessons, discounting the lessons 75 percent. Normally $48 for eight 30-minute sessions, the lessons will be reduced to $11. With the $4,000 grant, TDRPD can offer approximately 115 scholarships. Although the grant is only for one year, Oberacker plans to sustain the fund for swim scholarships through community support.

To qualify for the scholarship, children (aged 5-12) must take one full-price group swim lesson to have his or her ability assessed. Students who participate in the Elementary School Program will be automatically entered into the “pool” of qualifying children. Scholarships will be offered to children based on need for more swim practice, not income. If it’s deemed that a swimmer would benefit from extra lessons in order to reach a standard skill level, he or she will be offered a scholarship opportunity.
The Community Swimming Pool is located behind the Tahoe-Truckee High School at 11725 Donner Pass Road. For more information on group swim lessons, call 530-582-7725 or visit tdrpd.org.
