TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. — On Saturday, Sept. 20 the Truckee Tahoe Peace Project (TTPP) will have a community celebration in honor of International Peace Day, which is recognized by thousands of organizations and millions of people around the globe.

Two free events, “Mediate for Peace” and a fun-filled celebration at the Community Art Center, located at 10046 Church St. in Truckee, will mark the day.

The free Meditate for Peace at For Goodness Sake, 8 a.m.-1 p.m., will offer a variety of meditation practices, including Tai Chi, Falun Gong, Singing Bowl Meditation, Yoga Nidra Meditation and more. Stay for one or for them all.

At noon head over to the Community Art Center and practice “Yoga for Peace” with Shari Beard before the main performances and activities begin.

The family fun and community celebration will run 1-5 p.m. with an abundance of activities for kids, raffles, performances and a chance to visit exhibits from nonprofit organizations that help make an extraordinary community.

Creative craft activities, face painting and a bouncy castle are all part of the fun. Enjoy performances by Inner Rhythms Dance Studio and sing and dance along to musical performances from Papoose Preschool, the Tahoe School of Music and more.

As an expression of what peace means to them, area school children have been decorating “peace flags.” These colorful flags will be on display at the celebration and perhaps remind us to ask “What does peace mean to me?”

Don’t miss the presentation of the third Truckee Tahoe Peace Award.

This award was created by the TTPP to publicly recognize, commend and thank the individual who best represents the spirit of peace in our community. Help us honor and celebrate the recipient of this award on Peace Day.

In the words of Mother Teresa “Peace begins with a smile,” so come and dance, sing, play, do yoga, meditate and smile with us!

Make a space for peace in your heart, your life and in our world on International Peace Day.
