Truckee trails tax measure will be on June primary

TRUCKEE, Calif. — When voters head to the polls this June, they will see a trails sales tax measure on the ballot.
On Tuesday, Truckee Town Council unanimously approved the measure for the June 3 primary, and paying $10,000 to conduct the election.
The quarter-cent, 10-year sales tax increase is estimated generate about $1 million annually for construction and maintenance of separate paved and earthen trails.
Historically, the town has funded separate paved trail construction through developer funding, special local funds, general funds and a strong emphasis on grant funds. Town staff does not believe that is a sustainable, long-term method to fund trails.
Additionally, maintenance costs have been low due to Truckee’s trails being relatively new, according to the town.
To pass, the measure must garner two-thirds majority among voters.
