Volunteers sought for 2015 Ironman Lake Tahoe

Staff report

TAHOE CITY, Calif. — The 2015 Ironman Lake Tahoe triathlon is seeking 3,500 volunteers to help with the event scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 20.

It makes the third annual Ironman triathlon staged at various locations though out the North Lake Tahoe-Truckee region.

Volunteers are needed from Wednesday, Sept. 16, through Monday, Sept. 21, although the majority of duties will fall on the 20th, race officials said this week.

The Ironman Lake Tahoe triathlon will begin with a 2.4-mile swim at Kings Beach in Lake Tahoe, followed by a 112-mile bike trip with a two-loop circuit traveling from Kings Beach, Truckee and then over the Brockway Summit, before finishing at Squaw Valley.

Athletes then grab their running shoes and complete a 26.2-mile marathon run through Squaw Valley and back up to Lake Tahoe, before eventually looping back to Squaw Valley for the finish.

“Ironman athletes need a great deal of fluids and food in their quest to become an Ironman,” officials said in a press release. “Aid stations, staffed by volunteers, are where athletes can obtain nourishment while on the course, are an integral part of the race.”

Nonprofit entities that volunteer in groups of 15 or more have the opportunity to apply for a grant from the Ironman foundation. Last year, the foundation awarded nearly $50,000.
