World’s largest girl-led business returns
TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. — New Year’s resolutions will crumble as the 2014 Girl Scout Cookie Program returns to northern Nevada and northeastern California. The Cookie Program will run now through March 23 with door-to-door sales in January and deliveries in February. Troops will host their Cookie Booths in front of retail shops and grocery stores in March.
What began as a humble fundraising effort in year 1917, the Cookie Program has grown into one of the most respected financial literacy programs for youth in the nation, yielding $790 million in annual sales.
Brooklyn Saunders, a 10-year-old Girl Scout with Troop 223 of Incline Village, Nev. is selling cookies for her second year.
“Selling Girl Scout cookies has taught me how to be a salesman, how to look people in the eye, how to talk in front of people and how to set a goal and reach it,” said Saunders. “We are raising money so we can cross the Golden Gate Bridge in May and go from Junior Girl Scouts to older Girl Scouts.”
Tracy Saunders, Brooklyn’s parent, said it has been amazing to watch her daughter become such a confident young salesperson.
“Some kids are great at sports … turns out Brooklyn is great at selling cookies, and as a parent of a child who struggles in school, to see my daughter so confident and empowered is a wonderful thing. These are lessons that will last her a lifetime.”
Girl Scout Cadette Vanessa Koster is an Alder Creek Middle School student and sold 600 boxes of cookies last year. She plans to sweeten the pot this year and hit a 700-box goal.
“It’s not just about selling cookies. It’s about the five basic skills I can use in the future. They are: goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics,” said Koster.
When asked what types of things the cookie sales fund, she replied, “Troop activities such as planning our Family Hike event and even having fun at the ropes course with my troop while building teamwork and self-confidence. The funds also help us help our community such as making blankets for the children’s cancer center and even helps pay for our troop to attend different service unit events such as Camporee.
“We love that our community gets so excited about Thin Mints and Caramel deLites, but we also want them to get excited about the incredible skills Girl Scouts learn by participating in the program,” said Julia Ratti, Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada CEO. “The program is preparing girls to make important financial decisions for their future families, running businesses, and making your community a better place.”
NATIONAL COOKIE WEEKEND
To celebrate such a monumental financial literacy program, Girl Scouts has declared Feb. 7 and 8 “National Girl Scout Cookie Weekend.” Girls will be asking more than 50 million cookie fans across the nation to order one more box of cookies in honor of their success in running the largest girl-led business enterprise in the world.
Cookie lovers are also invited to participate in a Cookie Blogging Tour and #CookieBoss Twitter Party to kick-off National Girl Scout Cookie Weekend.
New this year to the Girl Scout cookie line-up are the Cranberry Citrus Crisps, a whole-grain crispy cookie full of tangy cranberry bits and zesty citrus flavor.
Other flavors include: Thanks-A-Lots, Lemonades, Shortbreads, Peanut Butter Patties, Caramel deLites, Peanut Butter Sandwiches, and of course, the famous Thin Mints.
Koster’s favorite cookies are Caramel deLites, but she admitted “Lemonades sure do come in a close second.”
The cost of Girl Scout Cookies remains at $4 per box, and all proceeds from the Cookie Program stay local.
“Buying Girl Scout Cookies is an easy way for people to support building our nation’s next generation of leaders,” said Ratti. “Whether you order them from a Girl Scout you know, or make a purchase in front of your local grocery store, your support is making a difference in the lives of girls today.”

JOIN THE CLUB
All girls in grades K-12 may still join Girl Scouts to take part in the Cookie Program, making them eligible to earn badges, attend summer camp, join in community Girl Scout events, travel opportunities, and more. Girls do not need to join a troop to participate in Girl Scouts; there are many paths to participation to accommodate the busy lives girls lead.
