Lost skier found in Squaw Tuesday

Staff reports

For the second week in a row, area search and rescue teams have had to search the hills for a lost skier.

On Monday, Feb. 6, Placer County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a missing skier in the Squaw Valley USA area.

Jerrold Mishkin, 25, of San Francisco had not returned home by 7:30 p.m. Monday as expected. At about 4 a.m. Tuesday his concerned girlfriend called authorities and a search and rescue operation began.

Members of local rescue teams began a search of the area. At 7:50 a.m. Tuesday members of Squaw Valley Ski Patrol located out-of-bounds tracks and followed them, locating Mishkin’s abandoned skis at 8:45 a.m.

At 9:20 a.m., searchers found Mishkin cold, but in good condition, at the Five Lakes Drainage near Big Springs. Mishkin and the searchers were airlifted back to Squaw Valley USA by 10 a.m.
