Low voter turnout expected in Nevada County

NEVADA COUNTY ” As of Monday morning, 5,865 Nevada County residents had returned mail-in ballots, about 8 percent of the 62,656 active voters in the county, Assistant Clerk Recorder Debra Russell said.

“We’re not going to have the 80 percent turnout we had in November,” Russell said. “Some people say 20 percent at the polls. I would hopefully think we’ll get better than that.”

Voters have until May 12 to make a request to vote by mail.

From now until election day, people can vote early at the Elections Office at the Rood Center on Maidu Avenue, off Highway 49 in Nevada City. Ballots also can be dropped off in the elections mailbox in front of the government center.

People are encouraged to vote early to cut down on the cost of hiring poll workers and setting up polling places at 58 precincts in the county.
