Man charged with murder in car crash

A San Francisco man who pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter charges following a fatal accident near the CHP scales in Truckee in 1994 will be arraigned today on new charges of second-degree murder.

Nicola Bucci, 33, was driving on Highway 12 from Fairfield toward Rio Vista at 6:36 p.m. Nov. 17 when he allegedly cut across a double yellow line in his Lexus SUV to pass slower traffic, then slammed into an oncoming car, Fairfield CHP Sgt. Wulf Carrington said Tuesday.

Demari Hutchinson, 12, and Immanuel Callison, 7, half-brothers, were riding in the 1988 Toyota Tercel that Bucci crashed into. The boys died at the scene, he said.

Back in July 1994, Bucci pleaded no contest to two misdemeanor charges of vehicular manslaughter after a double-fatality crash Jan. 13, 1994 on I-80 near the CHP scales, according to Nevada County Superior Court records in Truckee.

Bucci was originally charged with felony vehicular manslaughter and pleaded innocent, but the charges were reduced July 14, 1994 in exchange for his no-contest plea.

Bucci received five years of probation and was required to pay a total $15,000 in restitution to family members of victims Robert L. Defoe and Virginia Defoe, court records show.
