Man found dead near Truckee railroad tracks likely struck by train

Staff reports

A Homewood man was found dead near the railroad tracks near downtown Truckee Thursday night.

The body of Robert M. Sullivan, 80 of Homewood, was discovered at 8:55 p.m. by a railroad engineer who was passing through town, according to police.

In preliminary analysis, investigators from the Truckee Police Department, Union Pacific Railroad and Nevada County Sheriff’s Office determined Sullivan was most likely struck by an eastbound train at approximately 6 p.m.

Officers halted Interstate 80 traffic in both directions for two hours while the agencies conducted the investigation. The cause of Sullivan’s death is still under investigation.
