Man killed in rollover east of Truckee

Staff Reports

The combination of high speeds and no seat belt left a San Francisco man dead Friday night after a vehicle rollover on Interstate 80 just east of Truckee.

A 1995 Hyundai Sonata driven by Ernestine Chester, 31, of San Francisco, was traveling at extremely high speeds eastbound on I-80 toward Reno when they hit congested local traffic and the car spun off the road at about 11:41 p.m. Friday.

“Witnesses put them at somewhere between 90 and 100 miles an hour,” said Mark Cucera, CHP spokesman. “They were zipping in and out, passing people.”

The driver lost control of her car near the Prosser Village Road off ramp, and the vehicle headed over an embankment near the off ramp and rolled over several times.

Chester and her front seat passenger, Jerry Wilson, 33, also of San Francisco, were not wearing seat belts and were ejected from the vehicle. Chester landed on soft dirt but Wilson was killed instantly.

Two other passengers riding in the Sonata’s back seat were wearing seat belts and only suffered minor injuries, said Cucera.

Chester suffered major internal injuries in the crash and was transported to Tahoe Forest Hospital.

“A seat belt wouldn’t have kept them from having any injuries but [Wilson] almost certainly would have survived,” said Cucera.

Cucera said that the CHP will likely seek charges of manslaughter against Chester in the accident.
