Market Beat: Stocks of local interest

TRUCKEE, Calif. – One question that I hear from investors sometimes is, “are there publicly traded stocks that do business here locally in the Truckee Tahoe area?” The answer is yes.One public company that has a strong local presence is Vail Resorts. They own Northstar, Heavenly and Kirkwood ski resorts. The symbol for Vail resorts is MTN. Vail resorts has a market cap of just more than $2 billion, which is considered a small cap stock. The market cap of a stock is the total value of the company. To determine the market cap you take the price per share of the stock and multiply it by the number of shares outstanding and the result is the value of that company.MTN stock has appreciated in value by just more than 12 percent in the past year and they pay a quarterly cash dividend of 1.34 percent. Vail resorts has more than 4,000 full time employees and is rated “outperform” by Reuters research and Credit Suisse.Another interesting local company is Ormat Technologies. They are headquartered in Reno and their trading symbol is ORA. Ormat is interesting because they are in the electric utility industry group, but produce power from geo-thermal sources. As we move from traditional energy sources to renewable sources geo-thermal could play an important role, especially in the state of Nevada where geothermal energy is fairly abundant.Ormat is another small cap with a total market capitalization of about $875 million. They pay a small dividend of 0.83 percent and their price has increased by about 1.37 percent over the past year. They have more than 1,200 full time employees. Like Vail, they are also rated “outperform” by Reuters research.I know that no one enjoys paying their utility bills, but one solution may be to become an owner of your local utility provider to participate in their profits. Power in the local area comes from NV Energy Inc. Their symbol is NVE; in the past year, NVE stock has increased by 17.79 percent and they have a dividend yield of 3.60 percent. Their market cap is about $4.4 billion which makes them a mid cap company. NVE has more than 2,800 full time employees. They also have an outperform rating from Reuters research. If you want to learn more about Ormat Technologies, I’ll be interviewing their CEO on my radio show, “Ken’s Bulls and Bears Report” airing on Sunday, November 25, at 9 p.m. on 99.1 FM.Kenneth Roberts is a Truckee based Registered Investment Advisor.
