McClintock opens significant lead over Brown

The Associated Press

WASHINGTON ” Republican Tom McClintock has opened a significant lead over Democrat Charlie Brown in the ongoing vote count in California’s 4th Congressional District, the state’s one unsettled House race.

McClintock is predicting victory, but Brown calls that premature and says he is committed to ensuring that every vote gets counted.

McClintock has been leading Brown narrowly since Election Night in the far-flung district that takes in portions of nine counties north and east of Sacramento.

His lead widened substantially Friday as Placer County reported a chunk of votes.

McClintock now leads Brown by 1,566 votes out of 366,814 tallied, according to the secretary of state.

Thousands remain to be counted but McClintock contends his lead is insurmountable.
