Meeks Bay fire OKs wage increase

The board of directors for the Meeks Bay Fire Protection District approved an increase in part-time firefighter wages at their meeting Dec. 19.

In an effort to comply with the California minimum wage increase to $7.50 per hour effective Jan. 1, Meeks Bay Fire will pay their level-one firefighters an equal minimum wage. The level-two firefighters will then earn $8 per hour, and each additional level receives a $1 hourly increase.

The district wants to be in compliance with state wages to encourage part-time firefighters to join their team, said fire Chief John Pang.
