Meet Your Neighbor: Andrew Ryan
Nine years. I lived here for a year and then went back to school. I have been living here since 1999. I lived in Truckee for one year and that was enough. I worked at Daves Ski Shop, Tahoe Oar and Paddle, Ferrell Civil Engineering and now this. I have rode my bike to work for eight years. It is nice.
I ski in the winter and am usually late for work, so I drive. I have a cruiser bike that is good in ice and snow.
We had our one-year birthday in August. It felt good. We do semi-traditional civil engineering work. Tony and I started with common interests. We were founders of the Sierra Green Building Association and served two terms together as president and vice president, then we started this business. One of our core values is community involvement and activism. We both volunteer … I got involved in engineering because I was a slacker in high school, but I was great in math. I passed all the tests and it opened doors for me. Im the math guy and Tony is the English-communications guy. Its great because we have cross-over. Its also great to be in business with your best friend.
I grew up in Annapolis, Maryland. I came to Tahoe when I was a kid. My father worked for NASA and we moved for his job to the Bay Area when I was in sixth, seventh and eighth grades. We had a ski lease up here and I was exposed to Tahoe for the first time. I love recreating in the mountains. I love skiing, biking, hiking and kayaking. I drove all over this state for nine years kayaking.
It was interesting. We would go to shuttle launches and we would go on tours and see some of the most advanced equipment. One time my dad brought home a really expensive piece of equipment I was like four-years-old and he turned around and saw me rolling it down the hall and it was going to go in space in a few days. It was great exposure.
The Yard Dogs Road Show at the Crystal Bay Club. I didnt know what to expect, but after I saw it I realized that is exactly what I needed to see.
I do like bluegrass. I am a struggling bluegrass guitar player. I started when I was 25.
My favorite local band is Rusty Strings. They are good. The Suns Kara Fox interviewed Ryan for Meet Your Neighbor. Please send suggestions for Meet Your Neighbor to email@example.com, subject Meet Your Neighbor.
