Meet Your Neighbor: Dan Van Enoo
Occupation: Station manager of KTKE 101.5 FM, morning show host
Neighborhood: Verdi, Nev.
If you were going to make a playlist that reminded you of Truckee and Lake Tahoe, what would be on it? You know, I started my radio career here in Truckee in the ’70s, so let’s see … what was popular then? “Baby I love Your Way,” by Peter Frampton; anything by Fleetwood Mac; The Jackson Five, “I’ll be There”; “Nights in White Satin” from the Moody Blues; and the Grateful Dead, “Truckin'” or “Sugar Magnolia.”
What’s the best thing about being the host of a morning show? Getting up at 3 a.m. There is nothing like seeing the sun rise over the mountain tops in the high Sierra. After [the morning show], I manage the station ” clean the toilets, write commercials ” the day-to-day operations.
Before your recent move to Verdi, you lived in Truckee for more than 30 years. What do you see that’s positive about the amount of growth around here? I don’t want to say the roundabouts. It’s hipper and more progressive, but I have a hard time with this question because it was such a cool little town. You could just tell by the way that women dressed and wore their hair that it was 10 or 15 years behind everything else, and now we’ve joined the 21st century. I think the bad outweighs the good.
Do you love to hear yourself talk? I don’t mind hearing myself talk. The reason that people hate the sound of their voices is because you hear your voice when the sound goes in your ears, but you also hear it from within ” like when you cover your ears and can still hear yourself. But then, when you hear yourself on tape without the inner sound spectrum, you think you sound like Minnie Mouse. You sound normal to everyone else. I’ve just gotten used to it.
So where are you and what are you doing when you’re not in the studio? Well, I don’t want to sound all radio, but I have a studio at home and I spend time in there passionately. I also like to walk along the Truckee River for hours with my wife and my dog. I love the Truckee River. Winter, spring, summer, fall, there is always something magical about it.
