Meet Your Neighbor The Bergers

Jenny Goldsmith/Sierra SunAndrea, Barret and Jason Berger

How long have guys lived in Truckee?

Jason: About 10 years. I grew up in Tahoe Vista and my parents still own the same house that I grew up in.

How long have you been married? Do you have any kids?

Andrea: We’ve been married 14 years and yes, we have one son. He’s 4 years old and his name is Barret.

What did you name him after?

Jason: We named him after Barrett Lake off Highway 50 at the edge of Desolation.

What does a surgical technologist do?

Andrea: My job is to assist in surgery by handling all the instruments and anticipating the surgeon’s needs, but most importantly, protecting the patient by maintaining sterility at the surgical field and making sure things don’t get left in the patient.

What do you do, Jason?

Jason: I own a business called North Shore Transportation. We transport pretty much anything other than people.

Do you do any volunteer work?

Jason: We volunteer for Disabled Sports USA and we’re part-time Optimist members.

What do you do with disabled sports?

Jason: We run a program called Backcountry Access which gives participants an opportunity to experience the wilderness via snowmobile or off-road vehicle. We usually take three trips every summer ” two day trips and one overnight trip and in the winter, we offer one snowmobile trip. The purpose is to give participants the opportunity to see areas they might not otherwise be able to venture into.

Why did you decide to get involved with disabled sports?

Jason: I got involved because of a suggestion from my mom. Both of my parents have always been actively involved with the community and have done their best to try and impress that on my sister and I.

Andrea: In turn they impressed that on me. I saw what a great thing Jason was doing so I got involved too and it’s something we enjoy doing together.

What are some of your other hobbies?

Jason: We enjoy anything and everything that has to do with being outside.

What is the best part about being a parent?

Andrea: So many things. The feeling of love for a little person you never could have imagined, and watching them grow and anticipating the person they’ll become.

What is a goal you have yet to accomplish?

Jason: My main goal right now is to get us into a financial position to where I don’t have to actually drive for the business, and as Barret gets older I can be more involved in coaching and other school activities.

What is your greatest accomplishment thus far?

Andrea: My strong marriage and being Barret’s mommy.

What is something your neighbors don’t know about you?

Jason: I don’t think my neighbors know that I grew up here.

Andrea: My neighbors might not know that I feel bad that I haven’t met them all yet.
