Mills pleased with track team’s effort

Reflecting on his team’s success at the 2A State Track and Field Championship this past weekend, North Tahoe coach Warren Mills couldn’t help but pose a “what-if” scenario.

“What would we do if we had a track?” Mills asked, still beaming with pride Tuesday from the Lakers’ State performance.

The coach was particularly pleased that every one of the North Tahoe athletes who qualified for State brought home a medal ” awarded to first through fourth place.

In all, the Lakers earned six first-place medals, three seconds, eight thirds and four fourth places. They also had three “double champs,” Mills said ” Ryan Blount, James Laughlin and Carly Leininger.

Blount won the 110-meter hurdles and was a member of the winning 4×400 relay along with Brent Marple, Michele Basile and Joe Erman. Laughlin won the discus and shot put, and Leininger took the top spot in the 1,600 and was on the winning 4×800 relay team with Lauren Robinson, Sierra Postler and Maiya Greenwood.

“It was an amazing day for us,” Mills said. “It’s the first time we’ve ever had every kid we took to State medal.”

Not only that, each athlete set a personal record in his or her event.

“I was really impressed,” Mills said. “Everybody maxed out.

“Talk about peaking. We peaked at the right time.”
