Moderate quake rattles residents in Truckee

A moderate earthquake shook Truckee Sunday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The magnitude-4.8 quake was centered about 8 miles east of Truckee. A Nevada County Sheriff’s Department dispatcher said there were no immediate reports of damages or injuries from the quake, felt 100 miles away in Sacramento.

“It was just one big thump. Everything shook but nothing fell off the shelves,” said Tina Stull, who owns the Glenshire General Store. “It was just a big, strong jolt. We had a lot of scared people. Everybody just sort of froze.”

At the River Rock Christian Fellowship, however, the temblor was nothing less than a message from God, said Pastor Eric Moen. Moen was in the middle of a sermon about Silas and Paul, who, according to the Bible, had been put in jail because of their faith.

As Moen was describing how the pair escaped their cell because of a great earthquake, his sermon to about 40 people was punctuated by shaking.

“Metal doors shook like crazy,” Moen said. “Everybody just jumped up and were running around screaming because everybody knew it was from God.”

Moen said he has been through at least six earthquakes, but Sunday’s quake “felt like the biggest, in many ways,” he said. “This one had a smack to it.”

Californians have had a string of significant earthquakes this month after several years of relative seismic calm. But seismologists say clusters of quakes do not necessarily mean the Big One is coming.
