More cotton bags for Truckee project

Working with Alder Creek Middle School students, the Town of Truckee will now have 3,000 reusable grocery bags to give out to the public.

With nearly 19 billion plastic grocery bags ending up in California’s landfills or littering the state, Truckee’s recycling coordinator Nichole Dorr wants to reduce the number of plastic sacks floating around Truckee.

“We want to help raise awareness about plastic bags and get people in the habit of using reusable ones,” Dorr said.

Dorr said the town was originally awarded $10,000 for the project, which would buy about 2,000 bags, but another donor has stepped forward to bring the funding to $15,000 and 3,000 bags.

“After seeing the first article in the Sierra Sun, the Rohlf family asked to make a $5,000 donation,” Dorr said.

Alder Creek Middle School students in Sue Mock’s sixth-grade ecology class are working on a way to distribute the bags when they arrive in a few months, Dorr said, and will be responsible for educating the public on the bags and the town’s recycling.

Students will also help with a survey for the town to see what locals know about recycling, she said.

“Three thousand bags covers about 20 percent of the population,” Dorr said. “We are trying to keep the bags local, and I hope to see people in the local stores using them.”
