Mosquito fish are the best natural mosquito control available. Nevada County distributes them free of charge.
Confronted with rising cases of mosquito -orne illnesses such as the West Nile Virus, the Nevada County departments of Environmental Health and Agriculture have cooperated on a joint Mosquito Control project this summer. One of the efforts the project has developed is free Mosquito fish distributions in both Truckee and Grass Valley. Mosquito fish are natural predators of Mosquito larva that thrive in stagnant water.
“Mosquito fish are the best natural way to reduce moquito populations without using chemicals,” said Nevada County Senior CDA Technician Jaimy Gentry while distributing free Mosquito fish in Truckee on Tuesday. ” They will absolutely devour the mosquito larvae.”
The county sources the fish from McCourtney reservoir in Grass Valley and distributes them free to pond owners. There are currently two future open distribution days at the Grass Valley Fairgrounds from 12-2 on July 24th and Aug 21st. No further open distributions are scheduled for Truckee but local residents may call the Truckee office of Environmental Health and request mosquito fish for local pick-up – (530) 582-7884.
